This week we're sharing some of the biggest trends the nonprofit sector will be seeing so much more of in the coming year. First up, the rise of online video!
You’re probably already aware that YouTube reaches more adults aged 18 to 34 than any single cable TV network - but those elusive millennials aren’t the only people who respond to the persuasive power of online video! Almost half of American consumers are more likely to read email newsletters that include links to video.
A major trend for nonprofits in 2016 will be the use of online video for storytelling.
Digital newsmedia has already realized that video can often reach more readers and acquire more subscribers than traditional blog pieces or articles. All nonprofit professionals who care about effective communications should follow successful content creators like AJ+, ATTN: or BuzzFeed on Facebook for excellent examples of storytelling through video.
Creating online video for your cause has never been cheaper or more accessible. Your organization can easily livestream with mobile apps like Meerkat and Periscope, or broadcast video through Google+. (“Livestreaming” means you are using a smartphone or tablet to broadcast events as they happen live.)
Most of the services out there even allow you to save and archive your videos in the cloud to view or edit later. The apps or programs available to you in 2016 may change, but the concept will remain the same: If you want to communicate persuasively, use online video.
Here’s two fantastic examples!
The British Museum and @TheHistoryGuy Dan Snow used Periscope to present a live 30-minute preview of the blockbuster exhibition, “Defining beauty: the body in ancient Greek art”. The archived video is available on their YouTube channel. All you need to replicate this idea is a smartphone and an engaged presenter!
In North America, Coldest Night of the Year uses online video to teach their charity walk participants how to fundraise online. The videos offer fun and easy tips that speak to new participants and veterans alike. The videos can be used by team captains across the country to encourage their members to get that important first donation in. Visit ColdestNightOfTheYear.org to be inspired.
